If you simply want to find some general information on cylinders then hop over to our main website; there's lots of reference material including an article on how hydraulic cylinders work if you really want to get back to basics!
The double acting hydraulic cylinder is more common than its single acting counterpart. It works at any angle and in almost any application where hydraulic power is needed and is typically used when an external force is not available to retract the piston or where high force is required in both directions of travel. Even with applications where gravity (or weight) can assist retraction, hydraulic pressure is often applied to control acceleration, change the rate of travel and cushion the stoppage.
Put simply, a double acting hydraulic cylinder works by having the fluid act alternately on both sides of the piston. It has a port at each end, complete with hydraulic fluid for both the retraction and extension of the piston, and is commonly found in applications where:
- an external force cannot retract the piston;
- high force is necessary in both directions of travel;
- space is limited and the movement required will not allow a traditional hydraulic cylinder to extend far enough.
Travel in one direction always varies from travel in the other, all things being equal; the push action exerts more force and is slower but a greater work output is generated. The pulling action is quicker, but a reduced work output is produced.
We have plenty of case studies that we can talk you through, or show you online on our main website, including an international refuse and waste management services company needing a bespoke 3-stage telescopic, double acting hydraulic cylinder. Importantly, so we believe, we have lots of testimonials for you to peruse to see what our customers have to say about us.
