Hydraulic Motor / Motors
Hydraulic Motors – Technical Library
A hydraulic motor (or hydraulic actuator) is used to convert the kinetic or potential energy (hydraulic pressure and flow) of a fluid (hydraulic oil) into mechanical energy and rotation, the hydraulic motor being the rotary counterpart to the hydraulic cylinder.
Hydraulic motors, hydraulic pumps and hydraulic cylinders can be combined together into hydraulic drive systems. When one or more hydraulic pump is coupled to one or more hydraulic motor, a hydraulic transmission is then created with hydraulic fluid being used under pressure to drive machinery.
The useful power in any hydraulic drive system is calculated as a product of flow and pressure, minus any inefficiencies. Therefore, when selecting a hydraulic motor and/or hydraulic pump for a specific application the relationships between flow, displacement, speed, torque and pressure, and the influence of any inefficiencies must be taken into account.
Hydraulic motors have many applications including: winches and crane drives, wheel motors for military vehicles, self-driven cranes, excavators, conveyor and feeder drives, mixer and agitator drives, roll mills, drum drives for digesters and kilns, shredders for cars, tyres, cable and general recycling, drilling rigs and trench cutters.
The main types of hydraulic motor are:
• Hydraulic Gear Motors and Hydraulic Vane Motors
Hydraulic gear and hydraulic vane motors are used in simple rotating systems. Their benefits include low initial cost and high rpm.
A hydraulic gear motor consists of two gears; the driven gear (attached to the output shaft by way of a key etc.) and the idler gear. High pressure oil is ported into one side of the gears, where it then flows around the gear edges, between the gear tips and the wall housings in which it resides through to the outlet port. The gears then interlock, not allowing the oil from the outlet side to flow back to the inlet side.
A hydraulic vane motor comprises a housing with an eccentric bore, containing a rotor with vanes in it that slide in and out. The unbalanced force of the pressurized fluid creates a force differential and causes the rotor to spin in one direction.

• Hydraulic Axial Plunger Motors
Hydraulic axial plunger motors are generally used for high quality rotating hydraulic drive systems. Whereas the speed of hydraulic pumps typically ranges from 1200 to 1800 rpm, the machinery to be driven by the hydraulic motor often requires a much lower speed. This means that a gearbox is usually needed when a hydraulic axial plunger motor is used.
Hydraulic axial plunger motors are used when a continuously adjustable swept volume is needed. This type of motor is the most commonly used in hydraulic systems.
• Hydraulic Radial Piston Motors
Crankshaft type - with a single cam and pistons pushing inwards. This type of hydraulic motor has extremely high starting torque characteristics. They are available in displacements from 40cc/rev through to about 12 litres/rev but can sometimes be limited in power output. Crankshaft type radial piston motors are capable of running at "creep" speeds and some can run seamlessly up to 1500 rpm whilst offering virtually constant output torque characteristics. Despite essentially being an old design, this makes them the most versatile type of hydraulic motor.
Multilobe cam ring type - with a cam ring which has multiple lobes and piston rollers that push outwardly against the cam ring. This produces a very smooth output with high starting torque but they are often limited in the upper speed range. This type of motor is available in a very wide range from about 1 litre/rev to 250 litres/rev. These motors are particularly good on low speed applications and can develop very high power.
